Take cats to a shelter?

They are not even my cats.  There are 2 that hang out in our backyard and are very friendly, not feral.  I pet them and hold them and brush them, even clean the ears of one.  I believe one is male, the other female, both fixed.

Recently I noticed the male cat was bleeding from the top, outside of his ear.  He probably got it from a cat fight because he also had 2 scratches on his face. I got a damp cloth and cleaned him up a bit and noticed there was some puss in with the blood.  Two days later he had a huge lump on his ear.  I brought him in the house and with a damp towel loosened up the dry, crusted fur and a bunch of smelly puss came out (I knew it would).

So I think he belongs to someone, he is very well fed and I see him around the neighborhood (the only time I see the other one is when she is in our backyard). Because they are outside cats do people assume they don't have to take care of them? Because neither is well cared for, only fed.  I'm thinking of taking both of them to the shelter; what do you think?

Welcome to Cats and Kittens. I would first go around your neighborhood and find out if someone does actually own them. If you just take them to a shelter they will most likely be euthanized unless you take them to a no-kill shelter. The one with the pus - that is an abscess and needs medical attention in order for it to heal.

Good luck!

I agree with Cat - if you think they belong to someone, you need to try to find that person.  I would hate to have one of my cats disappear on me (not that mine go outside, but still....).  Then maybe try to have a conversation about how cats live longer healthier lives being indoor cats.  Maybe there are money issues or family issues and they could use some help.  Maybe they just don't know.  Or, maybe they don't care.  If that is the case, then see if you can find a no-kill shelter that has some space and suggest trying to find these cats a nice indoor home of their own.

Welcome to Cats and Kittens.  I have to agree with the others.  I would first try and find out who the cats belong to.  If you can find a no-kill shelter to take them to if their owner can't be found then they may have a good chance for adoption since they are friendly.  Many times cats are just dumped off in neighborhoods for one reason or another hoping that someone will take care of them.  I have no idea why some people don't take care of their cats.  It's really sad.

OK.  I will post their pictures and see if anyone claims them.

I volunteer at the Humane Society, so if I do bring them in I can keep an eye on them.

Thanks so much.
