I'm off tomorrow and we're gonna try to leave our furbaby out of his kennel when I run a few errangs.  First one - I'm just going to pay rent so I'll only b gone about 5 minutes.  Then later that day - I'm going to try to run to the grocery store - maybe 1/2 hour - and see how he does.  He hates going into his kennel and he's been so good - would love for him to be able to just lay on our bed and sleep.  I think he'll be ok but just want to go slow with this.  I know many of you love the crate train dogs and he goes into it now when we tell him to - no happy but he does - but we want to see how he does outside of it.  Anyone have any tips????  Wish us luck tomorrow!!!!

Good luck! My advice would be to use a baby gate and only allow him access to one room to start, as opposed to the run of the whole place. It's a big transition to go from being in the crate to being loose, so let him build up to it by starting small and then increasing his access. Also make sure to dog proof the area and make sure he won't have access to anything dangerous he can chew, choke on, etc.

I hope it goes well!

Good luck, hope he does well. We try it with our littlest one every now and then. Sometimes she does good and other times she does this......

This would be the second kleenex box that she has torn to shreds. LOL! I think it was good advice to use a baby gate and keep him in one room. Either way make sure you look over everything to make sure there isn't anything he will get into.

We were gonna try it today but he had his shots this morning and had a reaction to one of them!  He got very lethargic and didn't care about anything while we were in the lobby at the vets.  He was actually laying at my feet at one point after he had pooped.

The vet had come out to the front desk to ask a girl something and saw him - came straight over to him and was talking to him and checking him out.  Had him sit up for a minute and then Vincent laid right back down.  The vet asked if I could leave him with them while they keep an eye on him and they would call me once he perked back up.  He said some dogs have a reaction to one of the shots he gave him and some don't.  So - nervous as I was - I left him there.

They called me about 1 1/2 hours later to come and get him.  Got there about 1/2 hour later - OMG - what a different dog:  excited, nosy, wanted to check everything and everyone out.  He's napping next to me now - had a little walk and ate some food.  He's a little more mellow than normal but I'm sure he's exhausted with eveything he went thru today - Plus they took some blood to test for heart worms - NEGATIVE on that :)

Thats for the idea of the baby gate but honestly - he would just jump it.  I think we're gonna leave him in the kennel for awhile - maybe a few more weeks and then slowly get him use to being out of it when no one is home.  Might be a good thing to work on when my husband is at deer camp :)

I'm so glad that he is OK....some dogs do have reactions to even the most common vaccinations.

I remember years ago when my vet was supposed to come to check out my dogs....he called to cancel because he had an emergency.  The next time I saw him he told me that one of his patients had a bad reaction to a shot; the owner had called him to tell him that the dog was having a hard time breathing so he had to go over there to help.
