I am seeking advice. Our dog is going to be 3 in March. He is great with our kids. We have 4. 13,11, and 5 year old twins. Anyway he was down by the street at the end of our driveway with all of the kids. And a couple walking by with there dog. Both of the dogs were barking. Well when the couple walked past. Hummer bit the man in the butt.He has never bit anyone. He is a very people person always with myself or the kids. The lady said that once they bight. They continue. I have called my vet and they referred me to behavior specialist. That want's 400 just to see him. I would love any advice.
Kindly,
Barb

Hi Barb and Welcome to the Board.  I'm Laura and I'm the furmom to a 14YO dalmatian, Samantha and 3YO lab/mix, Cleo.

I'm so sorry this happened.  What breed of dog is Hummer?  What were the circumstances leading up to the bite?  If both dogs were barking, did the man try to intervene?  Perhaps Hummer thought that your children were in some sort of "danger" from this man.

What was the couple's reaction...will they be pressing charges?

I believe that you have to look at the entire picture.  My dal, Samantha, has snapped at someone on one occasion, but I believe she was provoked.  And it has never happened again.  I don't believe you can say that just because a dog has bitten once, that they will do so again....especially if this has not been the case before.

Perhaps if you can give us a little more information we can be of some assistance.....

Hi Laura,
Hummer is a Portuguese Waterdog. I think that because the kids were their he was guarding them and our home. They said that it was completely unprovoked. They had their dog on a leash and Hummer was not. The fact that he bit him unprovoked and while he was walking away is a great concern. If I am in the car and a man walks by he will bark protectively. Also anyone that comes to the house he will do the same. Until I say that it is okay. But he has never bit anyone. I even had him at the dog park the day before and their were kids men and of course dog's and he was fine.He used to be dominant at the park but our neighbors grand dog has bit him a few times and broke skin and now he is submissive. They don't play anymore either. Oh and he was neutered when he was 1. I will not be letting him out of the yard with out a leash. Our first dog Marin nipped at our son when he was 2. Jacob was playing with her food. The vet said NEVER allow kids near their food. And she never bit anyone again.
Thank you so much for taking the time to offer me your advice.
Kindly,
Barb

First and foremost, I wouldn't have him loose outside without a leash anymore. There are just too many potential dangers for him and possibly those with whom he comes in contact.

This may very well just be an isolated incident and he could have been provoked by something the couple didn't even notice. It's possible that just keeping him contained (such as behind a fence) or on a leash will prevent something like this happening again and that will be the end of it. Since the only time he would run into strangers would be while on a leash and supervised by you, you would be able to control the situation much better. But if you notice on walks that he's developing a pattern of aggression around strangers, then I do agree with the vet that a behaviorist is a good idea because you'll want to nip that in the bud.
