Cat is the expert here - what *I* say is just based on what I have learned from other pet owners with dogs with cancer ... so we are ultra crazy, lol.

Dont EVER let them give your dog so many shots at once. Seperate them as much as possible. & from here on in, once all puppy shots are done (after age 1 yr - although they do need a repeat Rabies at a year - a year after the 1st rabies, so thats usually about 14 - 15 months old) - after those puppy shots are done, have TITERS drawn on anything other than Rabies. That means they will draw blood & see if the level of whatever it is (Lyme, distemper, etc) is still high enough in the blood that the dog doesnt need another dose. My Holistic vet said almsot all her dogs they draw titers on, never need follow up shots. She also doesnt recommend Lyme at all - btu thats a personal choice of course.

Cat - what do you find with titers? The same thing?

Sorry Im all of a sudden on here with lots of warnings & negativities  :(  Just after what we've been thru, Im a nut! lol   Feel free to tell me to shut UP!

We do offer titers but they are kind of pricey for some people. The way the vaccine protocols are set up now the vaccines are pretty spaced out as it is and we just revised ours even more since my Dr. is on the holistic side - here is what we do:

Da2lpp (no lepto for Dachshunds) - every 3 years (in puppies, they get their series of 3 and then the third one is good for 3 years)

Rabies - mandatory by law, first one is good for 1 year, all after that are every 2 years

Lyme - yearly

Lepto - yearly for those who have a chance of being exposed (live in the woods, hunting dogs, exposed to wildlife)

NO vaccines in dogs over 10 other than rabies.

Cat =^..^=

Edited to add: We NEVER EVER give more than 2 vaccinations at one time and if ANY dog has ANY kind of reaction, we give one at a time, spaced out weekly with a pre-medication on board to help counteract. If the reaction is so severe, they ONLY get rabies and nothing else ever.

It's good to hear the different protocols other vets/states use. Here in FL, rabies has been approved for a 3 year thing now. And our regular vet (not holistic) doesn't do any combo vax. We've cut way back on our vaccines, but I still give what the vet recommends. Kennel cough has to be given yearly due to the outbreaks we have here, plus we are at the groomer once a month. I've heard the lyme vac has always been taboo, but I've met a few people with lyme disease and I would never wish that disease on anyone. It can be devastating and slowly rob someone of their quality of life. Just my two cents to compare notes.

I really wish RI would go to a 3-year rabies - we don't have many cases anymore and the vaccine we use is a licensed 3-year product. Also... we are in Lyme central here where I am, it has actually migrated from Lyme Connecticut to here - we see so many cases of lyme each day, unfortunately the vaccine is a must :(
