Update on Pooh Bear's itch/scratch

Just an update on Pooh's  itch/scratch. The conditioner and less baths have helped a great deal. However, at some point during the night, he jumped from the bed and went to his favorite little hiding place and quietly either chewed or clawed a gash onto his body where the top of his leg joins, on his side. We do have a Rx bottle of steroid spray to be used as little as possible that always cures it overnight, it seems. But my vet at one time suggested corn starch shampoo be used before the medicated one. I would have to order it on line, no problem. But I recently had hives from an antibiotic and used just plain cornstarch in the bath for soaking, found that old folk remedy quite helpful. Has anyone ever tried mixing cornstarch into the bath for a sort of soak on your dog? I have that here, but none of our stores carry the shampoo and it will take 4-5 days to get it if I order it. Just wondering.

Thanks!

Gayle

Aww, Pooh! Poor guy. I'm afraid I've never tried cornstarch as a soak but it can't hurt, can it? I'd try it. I did a google search for cornstarch soak and came up with this- it's a recipe for a soak to help with the itch from shingles. This is for people so I'd probably cut back on the cornstarch some.

How to Treat a Shingles Itch

  • Step 1

Pour 2 cups of cornstarch under the faucet of the tub while it's filling with lukewarm water. Soak in the tub for 15 to 20 minutes to help alleviate itching. Try soaking multiple times each day to help soothe both the pain and itching of the shingles. Cornstarch will also help heal open blisters and sores.

    Dear Greta,

Pooh and I appreciate the trouble you took to find the directions for the cornstarch soak. We are going to try it! I don't know how he stands the itch, but have you ever wondered about the ladies in the long dresses and heat, no ac, all those bulky undergarments, how they stood it? So there has to be something beneficial in these simple home remedies, right? We are at the point of doing whatever it takes to avoid the steroid shots!

Thanks so much for the recipe. As soon as we bathe him, I will post results.

Have a great Labor Day week-end!

    Hugs from Pooh,

    Gayle

It was no trouble but remember that I'm not a vet and I didn't try the recipe so it's not verified. I just think that it may help and probably won't hurt. I agree about the home recipes. I can't imagine wearing all that stuff in the "old days".

I hope you have a great weekend too!

    Greta,

I feel sure the cornstarch won't hurt Pooh; it was pretty much what I had been using on my hives, just about 1/2 strength. (It has to be as mild as the clorox our vet advised--ouch!) As soon as his 'ouchie' is better, we are trying it,

    Thanks, Gayle
