What if you read a classified ad about a lost dog that states he had a tag, with a disconnected phone number on it?  And looked that number up on the net, to find the lost dog's owner's name?

And then you googled it to see if a new number would come up?  Instead, found that there's only one person listed under that name, in the entire United States!

And this person was a registered pharmacy technician, but was arrested for stealing controlled substances, and had her license revoked, two years ago.

And then read a few months ago she pretended to be a nurse to gain controlled substances at a local grocery store?  And arrested again.

Would you call the person who found the dog, and who also placed the ad in the paper?

Curious for opinions.

Perhaps she was named after her grandmother, or someone, and grandma's phone was cut off.... or maybe she's gone to rehab and is now an upstanding citizen?

If it's her dog, it's her dog. As long as she wasn't convicted of animal cruelty, I'd feel obliged to return the dog.

Life is simpler when you plow around the stump.

I have never had a listed phone number. There are MANY people who don't have listed phone numbers.. Many households these days are dropping their landline completely and using only cell phones, which aren't listed in directories. It's also possible for John an Jane Doe to be listed merely as 'John Doe'. If they have a sibling or friend living with them that person wouldn't be listed either. Just because you only found one person doesn't mean there aren't more. There are a wide variety of reasons for not being able to find someone when looking through telephone listings.

I also don't think that one should be judged just by what can be read about them on the internet.. What if you are wrong and this Jane Doe isn't actually the only one with that name and it's someone else entirely who has been stealing controlled substances? Or, what if, as you said, this is actually someone who was named after their grandmother and it's Grandmas dog? What if this dog is actually belonging to someone who lived with the person who was stealing the controlling substances? It would be pretty easy for them to have had the same phone number but only one of them being listed as the owner of the phone.. Especialy if they were only renting a room or staying for a short time with a friend after loosing a job or some such.

Personally, unless I knew for absolutely certain where this dog belonged, I wouldn't call. All you can do is pass on your assumptions which isn't going to do much for the dog in question.

Well, I called anyway.  Small towns, what can I say?  Turned out I knew the woman that found the dog.

And turns out the owner was the same woman I read about on the net, and she just got out of jail, again, and got her dog back a couple of days ago.

Wonder who will take care of the dog next time she's in jail?  Or prison?  How long will it sit inside her home, hungry and no water, while she's sitting in jail again awaiting bond, if there is one?  I've found junkies don't have alot of friends to help out with stuff like that.

If I wasn't dealing with three animals now from junkies, maybe I wouldn't be so sensitive and nosey about it.  And that's not counting a couple from the past.

Screw a bunch of junkies, imo.  I'm becoming very bitter towards them.
