Happy Wednesday, Everyone!

A little over a month ago, we got Joey the Dachshund. He's really cute and most everyone loves him. Henry, one of my youngsters (he will be 2 later this month) has decided he doesn't particularly want to share HIS momma with the weird-
looking weasle that has invaded his house. He doesn't try to EAT him but he does raise his hackles at him and he puts himself between me and Joey, given the opportunity. If I'm not in the room, there is no issue at all. <sigh> So, we are working on teaching Henry to share.

Question of the Week:  Have you ever had a jealous pet?  If so, did it take long for them to resolve the issue?

Many times.. It's a lot easier to overcome this problem with dogs than it is rabbits.

How long it takes, and what methods are best, really depends on the dog in question.. I had one who it only took a couple of weeks but he was the kind of dog who would do anything to please me and all I had to do was make say 'uh-uh' a few times and it was never an issue again.

With another dog the problem NEVER went away. I had 4 dogs at the time and she just did not like one of the others. She didn't want the other dog anywhere near me, on my bed (wether I was there or not) or in her crate. It created a very stressful situation for the other dog who was blind. I just had to stay on top of her. Send her to her crate when she started being pissy and block off my bedroom when I wasn't there. After about 2 years a friend of mine who wanted an older, quiet, well behaved dog took my blind fellow and I just didn't bring another dog home until my jealous girl passed on.

I haven't had problems with jealousy that might have escalated into aggression.  The dogs aren't really jealous of each other except once in a while Spencer will bump Buzz away when I'm petting Buzz but there's never any growls or hackles.  If someone is visiting then Emmy & Spencer will vie for first dibs on the visitor and keep at it constantly and whoever is losing at the moment will come to me for lovings.  Buzz isn't especially friendly with anyone but me.  He just keeps away and watches from a distance or is glued to my leg.  Buzz definitely has some very clingy issues with me.  But given his life before me, I don't worry about it.

All of my dogs are a little bit jealous, but not to the point of aggression.  It's pretty obvious though that Missy doesn't like me giving any of the other dogs too much attention.  Sadie doesn't like N to play with dogs other than her.  Delilah is the same when T plays with any of the others, and S isn't supposed to play with anyone but Ace - in Ace's mind.  It's like they each have their own person who is supposed to give only them attention... but if I'm playing with Sadie, Missy doesn't mind so much if N is playing with her.
