What is the best product to remove tear stains from around the eyes??? Especially dogs that have white fur? At puppy class a woman has a Maltese and her puppy has tear stains near her eyes that she is having a tough time removing. She has tried Angel Eyes with no luck, any other products or home remedies you know of?
There are several over the counter products that pet stores carry for this purpose. I know show people often use a borax powder to brighten those areas. One has to be very careful not to get the powder in the dog's eyes. Also, the show people keep the dog's coats wrapped in little baggies, separated in dozens of small sections, to keep dirt and other particles out of Maltese coat. There are some silicone-based products (like The Stuff) that can be applied to the coat to protect it from penetration by things that stain (urine, eye gloms, dust/dirt, etc.) but again you have to be very careful in applying it near eyes. They even bag/wrap the face hair. I've heard that some people wax-coat the drainage area with Chapstick. It won't remove existing stains but it will, supposedly, protect against further damage and it won't hurt the dog's eyes.
I think checking with a vet would be a good idea also, just to make sure the stains are not the result of some medical issue involving the eye (like an infection) or maybe allergies.
The Maltese does have allergies. Her name is Daisy and boy is she cute! She is so small and she must weigh 2 pounds soaking wet. She is our smallest dog in our class, next a Chi, and then Vozzy. Vozzy is doing really good. He is highly food motivated. He is very trainable. He is ringing the bells to go out and now he is learning "GO SETTLE" his next class assignment. With Peco, seeing me train Vozzy, he wants in on the act, which is great, I think that helps Vozzy learn and Peco is learning new things too! Both are learning GO SETTLE together and that is a good thing.
