Borax and my babies

I have two kittens, one almost 4 months old and the other is 4.5 months old. The youngest has fleas, though not terribly bad. My little girl has very few, if any. I need to get control of this issue, since we're moving in a couple weeks and don't want to take fleas with us. Well, and they seem to have an affinity for my husband too.

My question is this: I have 20 mule team borax, and I know it helps with fleas, but is it safe to sprinkle in the rooms the babies stay in? They aren't "allowed" in the bedroom right now, per DH's orders. Everywhere else is fair game. I don't want to hurt them, and so I want something that is less harsh than pesticides.

TIA! Oh, and great board! I don't know why I haven't thought of looking here for advice before today!

943502.jpg picture by HB-Cong-etc Liz.  It's great that you found us and I hope you will make yourself at home.

Although Borax will kill fleas, you will have to be very, very careful with it as it is toxic to pets.  You can do a light sprinkling of the carpets and work it in with a broom.  Leave it for 24 hours and thoroughly vacuum it up.  You will need to keep your kitties away from it while it is on your carpets.

You ought to take your kitties to your vet and have a vet approved flea treatment such as advantage.  Some of the over the counter remedies are not very good and can cause serious harm to your kitties.

I hope this helps and I'm sure that others here will have even more advice to offer.

All the best,

Thanks for the info, and the welcome!!

I'm planning to start searching for a vet this week in our new town. They both need to be fixed as well, so I plan to get everything done at once. I really just need something that will please DH without bombing the house.

My indoor only kitty, Miss Scarlet, ended up with fleas this summer - they were very bad here. I think they came in on our shoes or ???

Anyway, I don't like to use toxic chemicals like that in Advantage or Frontline. While they are very effective, they can cause reactions in some kitties. What I used is a product called Flea Busters. There is another one very similar but I forget what it is called.

Flea Busters is a borax product that you sweep into the carpet and cracks in the floor and it is supposed to have electrostatic properties that keep it in the carpets/cracks for 9-15 MONTHS. It is cheaper than the monthly application of the toxic chemicals.

You do need to treat the ENTIRE house and preferably use something outside also. It a bit of a job to sweep into most plush carpets but wood, ceramic and other hard surfaces just take a couple of minutes.

Email me privately if you want more info: planosmith@yahoo.com

I was not able to find it locally but did find it on line with "free" shipping.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to use and how it works.

Thanks! I'll definitely check into it. The crazy part is that we're *hopefully* (it's a weird situation) moving in the next two weeks, and I start a new job in a week. Things are about to get crazy, so it figures that we would get fleas now!

I'm guessing that we brought them into the house on shoes too. Both kittens were outside before I got them, but didn't have any trace of fleas then. But there are at least 5 cats and 5 kittens (assuming they all made it) that are loose on our street with 4 houses. My aunt has an indoor cat who got out the other day and came in covered. I'm grossed out by the thought that I walk in them everyday!
