... tartar control treats, and if so, do they work? Both my cats are prone to tartar on their back teeth that seems to build up quickly. Slinky just had her teeth cleaned in July and I already see tartar on her back teeth. I'm wondering if the tartar control treats work or not.

Are you just talking about the ones from the grocery or pet store? I've never used those, but the last time one of our cats went home after a cleaning the vet sold us some CET treats that have some sort of enzyme coating that's supposed to help. Of course, in our case the cat who really needed them wouldn't touch them, but they're supposed to work if they'll eat them. I've seen them online if you can't get them from your vet.

Thanks for the link, I had never heard of those! Maybe I'll give them a try. I'm trying to figure out a way to control this plaque build-up -- neither one of my cats will allow me to brush their teeth, and of course I want them to go through as few dentals at the vet as possible.

Misha had a dental a few months ago and the vet suggested Hills T/D.  It is  specifically designed to clean her teeth.  They don't smash up like ordinary kibble when she chews on them.  Ordinary kibble dry food and treats don't really work.

The other thing you can do is brush their teeth.  You could use a small piece of gauze, wrap it around you finger and clean their teeth.  You can also get some kitty tooth paste at either the vets or pet shop.

There is also something on the market called C.E.T., it was also recommended by my vet that you can put in their drinking water.

All the best,

We've used the CET chews or the Oxyfresh in their water.  You can get the CET chews at Omaha Vaccine or Healthy Pets for much cheaper than what you'll pay for them at the vet's office.

Our natural food pet store carries this and I'm thinking of trying it for the boys.  It's kind of pricey but the bottle will last a long time.

Most tartar control treats and food is just a marketing ploy just like all of the various foods for different breeds, indoor only, etc.
