We took our 2 year old kitty Mitzy into the vet yesterday because she has been sneezing and having a snotty, runny nose. When the vet was listening to her lungs and heart she noticed a heart murmur. She said is wasn't real bad at this point. She also went and got the senior vet for him to listen and just confirm and he confirmed was she heard.  Both vets said that it is okay at this point, but to watch and be sure she doesn't start coughing and not eating or drinking.

We are pretty upset about this. Mitzy is our first kitty we got when DH and I first started dating. She is our princess. Anyone else have a cat with a heart murmur???

Here is a picture of our little girl.

I'm going to guess this is not her first visit with the vet and they haven't said they heard a Heart Murmur before this visit. You have also said she has had a cold. Did they tell you they want you to bring her back in for a recheck on the Murmur in a few weeks or months? If not you need to call them and ask them about doing this. The Murmur could be illness related or even stress related.

We have to take  Sassy back in for a recheck since our vet heard a Murmur on her the last visit. If she hears it this time she will send Sassy to the heart specialist to have them run some test on her to see how bad it is. The heart specialist will then tell us what the options are and what we need to do for her.

I will tell you that this is our first time having a vet tell us they heard a Murmur in one of our pets. I can tell you that our YDD has a heart Murmur but it only shows up when she is sick. My Dr told me that this is illness related and only shows up when she is sick.

Our Vet said the same thing can happen with pets so not to get to worried right now. We just have to wait until we go for the recheck and see if they hear it again. Ii do know that I'm a bit concerned as Sassy is very small she is a little cat. Of her litter of 6 only2 kittens lived. The kittens had fleas bad, and were sick when they were little. When you see Sassy with our other cats she doesn't look the same, build is not normal and she walks funny. We are taking her soon as the new kittens need their second set of shots soon.

I will post any information my vet gives me if they hear it again. I would talk with your Vet and ask about the recheck and ask them for information. They should have given you a print out of information and a referral to a vet heart specialist for more testing and followup care. If they blow you off start looking for a different vet and a vet heart specialist. If you can't find this in your area you might want to find the closest veterinary school of medicine. Call them tell them what you have been told and see what they have to say.

I know from personal experience that it's scary when you first hear a vet tell you that your kitty has a heart murmur, but try not to get upset as they pick up on our emotions and that's not good for her.  First off, what grade is the heart murmur?  Just so you know, many cats do fine with heart murmurs it all just depends on a lot of variables.

Heart murmurs can mean many things in cats just as in people.  They can be idiopathic in nature and not really bother them at all, if diagnosed as kittens some may grow out of them.  They can be birth defects, they can be caused by hyperthyroidism or high blood pressure or indicative of a cardiac condition called hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM).

My youngest, Zachary was diagnosed in spring of 2005 with a grade 2 heart murmur when I took him in to get his anal glands expressed.  The vet and I both thought it odd as he'd never noticed a heart murmur before in him so to be on the safe side we did a baseline echocardiogram to check for HCM.  They didn't really detect any thickening of the heart muscle as in HCM in the echo or notice the murmur very much on the test, but said his blood pressure and heart rate were very elevated so we did the thyroid test.  That was totally normal.

It appears that his high heart rate and high blood pressure were due to "white coat syndrome" from being at the vet's.  At the time Gabe was getting acupuncture treatments at home and the vet who did the acupuncture is the wife of our regular vet.  So, he sent the blood pressure machine with her to test Zach at home in his own surroundings.  It was totally normal so that's how we confirmed our "white coat" diagnosis.

So we just continue to monitor him and we at least have the baseline echo to compare any others to if it returns.  That's right.....it's not been detected since then and we're at a new holistic vet now and she doesn't hear a murmur either.  I'm wondering if the murmur itself was a result of the "white coat syndrome".

I'm glad a couple of folks with more experience were able to help.  I don't know much about heart murmurs but I have heard that they aren't always that serious.
