Loveable Mixed Breeds

Hi everyone, I haven't been  here in awhile but I still lurk and keep up with you. I may be adopting another dog soon, don't want to say too much now in case I don't get him but will share as soon as I find out.

Shiner and Max are still with me Max is elderly and just sleeps LOL,  Shiner has gotten mean, I don't understand why I've always treated him like he was my baby. He tries to bite me if he doesn't get his way, and growls, and snarls at me when I give him his food. I can't trust him around kids anymore either, this has really been heart breaking for me. Does anyone know if this is common with a rat terrier? I've never had this problem with a dog before.

He gets regular check ups  and hasn't any health problems, my vet is even dumbfounded about him, it takes 3 of us and a muzzle, to hold him for his shots and blood work.  A  lady at my weight watchers class  has the same problem with her rattie and has actually been bitten, so maybe it's the  breed.

I've  raised a pit bull and a  chow who are known for aggressiveness and  never had this  kind of trouble with them. I'm about ready to give up on him.

Marly... I'm so sorry Shiner is being such a brat. I was thinking health issue too, but I know you would probally have gone that route first. What about some obedience training to remind him you are the leader and he must never  try to control the leader. I know how much you love him and how frustrated you must be.  Try mking him sit and stay sitting or he can't have his food.

Good luck with getting your newbie (fingers crosses). I got a shih tzu puppy a few months ago. I love that fuzzy baby so much. Molly is grumpy and aging quickly, but luckily she isn't snappy or anything. Just mainly doesn't feel good. Stella has really grown up and can even be trusted off leash now. Who would have thought crazy Stella would mellow so much??

Good luck with the new family member; I hope it works out for you! I'm awfully sorry to hear about Shiner's attitude problem; I can't think of any suggestions that haven't already been covered, but certainly wish you the best of luck in getting him to turn back around.
