Hi, I think i have been here before but i honestly don't remember.  Anyway, I wanted to introduce myself anyway.  I am the proud parent of an 11 yr old dd, proud wife to dh for 15 yrs and fur mom to a bunch special animals.  Two Goldens, four cats (all rescues), one sheltie/aussie mix we have had for 7 yrs and rescued from a shelter, two maltese that were given to me as gifts, and now the newest addition is a rescued shih tzu that i rescued from our local shelter.

Her name is Maple (per my dd and her friend).  I was told that she was around 3 yrs old, that they did not fix her because she was already fixed.  I took her home and immediately gave her a bath and noticed sores on her then the biggest surprise was the fact that she looked pregnant.  So i rushed her to my vet and he took one look at her and said she's pregnant.  I was like how could they miss that and he looked at her belly again and he said it looks like she has had a c-section and they may have mistakenly thought she was already fixed.  She also has a double ear infection and skin infection.  She is on amoxicillin and Otomax.  She was given a shot of antibiotics and something for the itching.  The vet told me that we will know for sure in a month if she has any babies but he said he firmly beleives she is pregnant.  he didn't want to do an xray because of her being in a strange environment.  He wants her to rest and get adjusted to our home before subjecting her to numerous tests.

That is my life at the moment.  She is super sweet and gets along great with the maltese fine.

If anyway has any advice please let me know.  I have never owned a shih tzu before.

I have two shih tzu and I love them dearly! They are so cute and friendly. Just give them the love and attention. Even with all the mishaps, they need someone to take care of them.

"To live content with small means; to seek elegance rather than luxury; and refinement rather than fashion; to be worthy, not respectable; and wealthy, not rich; to study hard, think quietly, talk gently, act frankly; to listen to stars and birds, to babes and sages, with open heart; to bear all cheerfully, do all bravely, await occasion, hurry never; in a word, to let the spiritual, unbidden and unconscious grow up through the common. This is to be my symphony." umgd.

Hi caffi....yes, I think I've seen you on some of the Boards...if not this one.  I'm Laura and I'm the furmom to a 13YO dalmatian, Samantha and 3YO lab/mix, Cleo.

When I found Cleo at the Humane Society I was told that she was found as a stray.  After having her home for a while I realized that she was very timid with strangers - there is no way that she would have allowed anyone to coax her into a car.  In addition, her nipples were very distended.  I believe that she had puppies, and then her "owners" decided they no longer wanted her, so they brought her to the Humane Society and said they found her.

Bless you for taking in Maple and giving her a wonderful forever home.  She is so lucky to have found you....who knows what the poor little thing went through before you adopted her.  And finding sores on her body....poor thing!!

Having a shih tzu is like having any small dog...and it sounds as if you're doing very well in the pet department.  What you do have to remember is that she'll need some time to adjust; but since you've already had rescues you know that.

If you want some help with that particular breed you may want to visit over on Popular Dog Breeds - they have a small dog folder.  And you can also visit on Dogs and Puppies.  Or just ask your questions here....we'll be happy to help in any way we can.

Good luck...and please be sure to keep us updated.

Congrats on your new addition! Maple sounds adorable! I can't offer any advice about the upcoming pups but I did want to congratulate you on adopting from the shelter.
