Hello. I´m writing because I have a very difficult situation and I really do´n't know what to do.

About 4 days ago, I came home to find a carboard box with 8 puppies on the street in front of my house (roughly 1 month old). DH and I couldn't just let them there so we've been feeding them, while we wait until saturday. Why saturday, because that's the day where there is a stray's fair downtown where people goes to adopt strays. (I live in a town with no amimal shelters). We managed to give away 1 of them pretty fast, and kept feeding the rest (giving them a mix of warm milk and puppy food).

Here is the problem... Right from the begining, we saw that about half of them were really curious, active and hungry, and the others not so much. One of them in particular wouldn't eat, and just sat there or slept. That's the one we found dead 2 days later. The problem is that after that, another of the puppies started to act like that, eating less and less... last night and this morning, he refused to eat at all. He comes to the plate, sniffs a bit, but it's like he changes his mind and walks away.... So I thought... if he keeps like this, he will die too...

And now, 2 more are starting with the same behavior (acting less hungry). This makes me really sad. I just can't let them die like this, but I really don't have the means to take 6 puppies to the vet and take charge of the costs!!! Plus, I have a dog of my own, and if this is a serious disease, I fear it could make my dog ill (he has vaccines and everything, though).

Any suggestions??

This is so, so sad! Kudos to you and your DH for trying to help these little guys. I don't know what to say. Do you know what breed they are? Perhaps there's a rescue for that breed around? If not, I would just take them to the vet, explain about the drop off, and tell them you are unable to care for them and leave them there. I can't think of anything else to do in this situation :(

Since your dog is up-to-date on his/her shots, they should ok. Many (((hugs)))!

Hi Mariana and Welcome to the Board.  Bless you and your DH for caring so much for these little furkids.

I would definitely take them to a vet, especially since you have no animal control in your area.  To me it sounds as if they may have parvo; to die so quickly isn't normal, especially since you are feeding them and caring for them.  If your dog is up to date on shots it shouldn't be a problem, but it does sound like there is something very wrong with these pups.

If your vet has any heart at all he will, at least, check to see what is wrong and let you know.  No responsible vet would allow puppies to die without some kind of care.

Good luck, and please be sure to keep us updated.

Hello and thanks for the welcome! I think I'll become a semi regular poster here, because I love animals and basically all my pets have been rescued one way or another. (yeah, I'm the nutty one in the family)

Sadly the situation with the puppies hasn't improved... Another one died last night, and according to the symptoms (anorexia, lethargy, diarrea and droopy hips)... I'm almost sure he had parvo..... Which means they all have it.

I'm trying to see if the vet will help me, at least giving them basic care. There are three more that are not looking allright, but there are two that might make it...

After feeling awful for them the last days, I had a looooooong talk to my sister (who is a doctor), and she tried to make me see that if they die, it's not my fault. So I'll try to take a healthier approach on this. I'm also pregnant and I don't want all the negative feelings to affect my baby boy.

I'll keep you posted!
