A couple of months ago a rooster showed up in our yard and was there for a while and then he left. I had chickens when I was a child so I thought it would be nice to have a couple and I was missing the rooster so I adopted a couple from animal control. I have a small coop in the yard. It's movable so we can scoot it around and have the chickens eating bugs all over (Terre- they do a great job on ticks). I've already noticed a difference in the bug situation since they came here.

Anyhow- I've been letting the chickens out of the coop in the evening so they can wander and get some exercise but I'm having to reinforce the "leave it" command for Gracie since she wants to chase them something bad. She's doing pretty well. She'll look at the chickens and then take a few steps towards them and then look at me and take a few steps back. I'm using milk bones and she's getting it. Of course, it would be a whole different story if I wasn't around, I'm sure. Bud doesn't really care about them unless they start walking in his direction and then he gets nervous and moves away. The chickens aren't afraid of the dogs at all. I hope they know the difference between my dogs and any neighbor dogs who might happen to get into the yard. Hopefully, Gracie will get more and more used to the chickens. She wouldn't hurt them if she got a hold of them I don't think. She just wants to "herd" things and chasing is fun for her. Sometimes to distract her I'll play frisbee or soccer while the chickens are out. It's funny though because she'll try to keep an eye on the chickens at the same time she's trying to play. She's so goofy!

Wow - I could use some chickens then! I can just see it now...Taz barking them off the property and the chickens turning  around and pecking Taz and Jack looking for ticks LOL!!

Seriously though...Hmm, not sure dh would like chickens but it's a thought. How cute Gracie wanting to herd the chickens. Wish I could see that.  ;-)

I'm not sure you'd be able to keep your chickens in the yard with Taz - LOL. I've always like chickens and it's fun having them around. They were supposed to both be hens (2 eggs a day would have been great) and that's what animal control told us but one is crowing. Not quite a hen. They have small combs though so that's why I didn't recognize him as a boy. And it's hard to tell when they're so young. You should see them chasing the grasshoppers and moths.

Gracie is pretty funny with them. I forget to bring my camera when I go out to let them out of the pen. I'll try to remember one of these times.

I always thought it would be fun having some chickens but that's never going to happen in my suburban neighborhood.  And besides, Emmy would kill them in an instant.  She is extremely high prey drive.  I don't thing the Greyhounds would care though.

I thought since greys were sight hounds that they had a high prey drive? The greyhound rescues in my area sometimes don't adopt out to homes with small animals like cats, etc, because racers are "trained" on smaller animals. A few of them got out in our area once and killed a cat because they got caught up in the chase. Just curious about this subject. I know greys are really great people dogs, but I thought they had to stay away from smaller animals due to their training.
