Happy Hump Day everyone!  How is your week going so far?  I'm so bummed that we're going back into the 100's for the weekend - ugh!

When I think of my dogs, I don't think of them as having fur as rather them having hair.  I'm not sure why.  I think of fur more like that which fluffy dogs have and my dogs aren't fluffy.  Emmy hair is very coarse and "hard".  If I hug her too much her hair causes me to break out in hives.  Spencer's hair is actually the closest to fur in my mind.  He has extremely soft hair and right now he's shedding a lot.  If I use a furminator on him, a TON of soft undercoat fuzzy hair comes out.  For a Greyhound, he seems to have a lot of hair and an undercoat!  Buzz's hair is short and flat.  His isn't particularly soft but not hard or coarse like Emmys.  His hair is a lot thicker than Spencer's but he doesn't shed.

What type of hair or fur does your dog(s) have?

I consider Jack and Taz to have fur. Taz has tiny short hairs but a lot of it. Her hair is very thick!!! Her hair feels like a fur coat. Jack's hair is a little bit longer and his hair is smooth. There's a section on his back where the brown hair is ltitle rough but the rest of him is soft. Jack and Taz shed a lot. Thus why my housecleaning is 3 times what it used to be!

Sorry you're back in the 100's. How is that  possible? I would have thought it would cool down. This past weekend we were in the 50's and we had a lot of rain.  It's been raining all week ;-(

Katie's fur is unusual. When she's freshly trimmed, she's very soft, but as it grows out over the month some hairs grow faster and make a more rough textured coat. OK, breed experts, is this what is called a "double coat" on some terriers? I love the fur on her legs and paws when it's a little longer and she's freshly bathed and air dried. It gets all curly. She looks like she's wearing fluffy socks.

Ah, the mysteries of a rescue mixed breed!

Sounds like it! My Wire Fox Terriers are "double coated" they have a soft undercoat- and then a harsh top coat that is considered "hair" because it is very similar to human hair. They do not "shed" their coats the hair will keep growing out until the dog is groomed (when they get really, really shaggy it will come in little clumps- but again not shedding)

Our Wires are hand plucked or stripped- that is the long old coat is pulled out and this allows the new - short hair to grow in. My DH does this on our show dogs daily to keep the coat "rotated" so he is always pulling out the long/old hair and allowing the new hair to grow in. The double-coat helps protect the dog from the weather.

The leg/face hair is a little different texture and is kept long - this gives the "beard" effect on a Wire.

On pet-dogs that are clipped you are now cutting off the in coming top coat and allowing the soft under coat to show more- this gives a soft texture to the coat and on a Wire- sort of "washes" out the color ( a dog with a black jacket will turn more gray) This soft coat will curl when washed - what you are seeing later on - is the harder "wire" hair coming in -most all of the terriers are double-coated again - this was because most came from the British Isles and the soft undercoat kept them warm & dry while the harsh "wire" coat repelled dirt & water (their coat tends to be slightly oily too) this was a help when going to ground after vermin.

That explains why Katie's color is so different before and after grooming! She's dark tan when she's long, and very, very blonde when trimmed. I wish there were an easy way to keep her in that "in between" stage, about a week before her monthly groom. She has more of a Toto look. She's also adorable fresh groomed, but then she has an almost Shih Tzu look. Unfortunately, if we go more than about 6 weeks, it gets hard to keep up with the brushing. Also, she licks a lot due to chronic allergies, and if the hair is long she gets fur balls. Coming out both ends. Ick.

We live in a warm climate, and Katie isn't a "nature girl", so I don't think she's at a disadvantage in that sense by not having that outer coat. But, is there anything we should keep an eye out for, like greater chance at sunburn or ingrown hairs?

(and thanks for being such a great terrier resource!)
