Yesterday we lost one of my DS's dwarf hamsters most likely to diabetes as he seemed to be constantly drinking and just didn't seem himself. We currently have another hamster from the same litter that has been peeing a lot and I think also might be drinking more than usual (harder to tell since his water bottle is bigger and DS tends to fill it back up before it gets empty). So far this hamster is acting normal. Without having any vets in our rural area that treat hamsters I am trying to figure out how to help this hamster. I have found some information online about testing for diabetes and diet but some of the information seems to conflict. Does anyone have any advice on what I should be feeding this hamster? Right now he is being fed the same hamster food (Wild Harvest Super Premium Hamster & Gerbil Blend) as the other 4 hamsters not exhibiting similar symptoms.

An update to the diabetic testing....I bought some keto-diastix testing strips and used them to test the 5 remaining hamsters. The one I was most concerned about has very high glucose and no ketones. Three of them had high ketones and no glucose. The last one was negative for both ketones and glucose. I was surprised about the 3 with the high ketone levels as they have no signs that there might be something wrong with them.

I switched the obviously sick one to Healthy Handfuls food made by Oxbow Hay Company. This was the only food that didn't list corn or sugars and was high protein, but other than that I have no idea if it is a good food for diabetic hamsters. Any advice?

Hello,

I'm sorry about your hammy. I know very little about their health (I'm a rat owner) but I will see what I can find online. I also see if Faith, one of the other Cl's might be able to help since she was a hamster owner for a long time.

Please keep us posted.

hi - welcome to the board, I am sorry about your hammy's. I am so sorry it took a few days to check in. I have been swamped at work and have not been able to check in until now. I really haven't had much expereince with diabetes in hamster, I know that is really isn't that uncommon though. Oxbow is probably the best food that you can buy for a hamster or any small animal actually. You probably are staying away from any treats, right? They are very high in sugar which I figure you arleady know...how about supplementing some of the oxbow food with a little romaine lettuce, don't do too much of any of these foods though because particualy the lettuce can give them diarrea if given too much. A little bit of grilled chicken or a little bit of hamburger meat cooked might be good, if there is no seasoning on it at all. I gave my hamster all these things, as well as some plain oatmeal, some plain yogurt and organic baby food. I had a hamster that had problems with her teeth so I had to modify her food.  If you decide to try to supplement with some baby food, just check the ingredients, they might have some corn in it. I found hamsters being hamsters seem to like the sweet tasting foods, like chicken with squash and corn etc so if you could find just the squash that might be ok, or just chicken with vegetables organic, there is an organic line I used of one of the major baby food companies. It is impossible for you to get to a vet in the area you are in, from what you said, right? I am going to see if I can find out any further info for you, but I really was just thinking if you could supplement the oxbow with the other stuff, it may be helpful. I think if that is difficult for you, that the oxbow might be ok, they really are pretty good at making really healthy stuff for our pets. Do you give your hammy any hay? that might be good to do too. Hope this is of some help...Please keep us posted, let us know how your little hammys are doing, I am so glad that you checked in here with us...what are the hammy's names?

Hello and welcome!

I am a chinchilla owner but I recently had one who was suspected of having diabetes at the vet's and she is having me change from Mazuri over to Oxbow chinchilla food and to avoid treats such as raisins or anything with sugar. I also got those glucose test strips to test her urine often to make sure there's no glucose. If she has positive glucose again I'll have to retest her blood under anesthesia to confirm the diagnosis.

It sounds like you're doing the right things. I couldn't find the ingredients to the Wild Harvest food you mentioned so I'm unsure if it's good or not.

I am so very sorry for your loss of your DS's dwarf hamster. I hope all your other hamsters do well and it's so nice they have a caring mom like you to look after them. :-)
