My husband and I are putting in a wood stove in our shop and also have several very brave kittens.  We are concerned they will try to jump on it.  Any ideas how to prevent burned paws?  We want them to enjoy warmth while we are out there working, but may not be able to if they can't stay off.

Keep in mind these little sillies climb up pants, ladders, walls...I was working on the roof one day, and Charlie climbed up a corner with his claws and joined me.  He isn't scared of ANYTHING!

Regretfully, I don't have any advice but aren't kittens wonderful and resourceful?  I have four and they fear NOTHING LOL.

Good luck.

Hi and welcome!     I am thinking maybe there is something you can put around the stove but I'm not sure what that would be.   We have a propane stove that gets hot and our 3 seem to know not to touch it.

You're right to be concerned. While cats can tolerate hot temperatures that people find uncomfortable, you don't want to risk burned paws, either. I'd recommend a two-pronged approach.

First, make the surrounding area uncomfortable so the kittens keep their distance. Gabby's right...something on the floor can work. You can find the "tacky" mats that are used to keep area rugs from slippling, and place that around the stove. Kitties don't like to walk on sticky surfaces. Or, get some of the plastic carpet runners and place them nub-side-up.

Second, create a cat resting spot that is HIGHER than the stove top. Kitties naturally gravitate to the highest perch in the room. So if there's something taller than the stove, that's also easily accessible and more comfy, that should be the more attractive place. Maybe a kitten-designed ladder with steps they can climb, toys tied to the steps, and a bed on the paint rack? It doesn't have to be pricy or look good (the kitties don't care) *s* good luck!
