I've adopted a feral kitty that I've had since October, 2004. She's not let anyone catch her so I finally did a few days ago. I noticed that she was limping and when she ran her right hind leg would go out to the side and she would fall. I took her to the vet today and they did an Xray on her hip. She said that she lad lost all muscle tone in the hip and that her knee was broken at some point. Or she said that she has bone cancer but she really didn't think that was it. She advised taking the entire leg off. I can't just say because I don't have the money to put her to sleep. I've really grown attached to her and trying really hard to socialize her. What should I do? I'm going tomorrow I hope to get a second opinion to what it is.

Hi there,

I'm sorry to hear about your cat.  I would most definitely get that second opinion, I strongly believe in doing that, you never know what another vet might say or know.  After you go and get the second opinion and you are faced with a decision to be made, I would first explore all your options.  Is there a vet in your town or closeby who would be willing to work with you and give you a payment plan?  What are the risks involved with this surgery if this is what the cat needs?

((hugs)) I wish I could help more, please post whenever you need to.  goodluck.

Heidi

Have you contacted your local Humane Society? Maybe they can help you out with the bills. Also, when you go to the vet, make sure you tell them that this is a cat that was a stray. Sometimes they will give you a discount because you took a stray in. It's worth a try. Good luck and let us know what happens.

I am glad that you found us, but so sorry for why you are here (((hugs))). So let me get this straight, a vet has advised you to amputate the cat's leg without knowing what is wrong with it? That just doesn't make any sense to me. I agree whole heartedly with Heidi and would get a second opinion. Please let us know what happens.

(((Hugs))) to you and kitty,
