My mom called early this morning, that's never a good thing. Apparantly, our cat fell in the pool and drowned. It's very sad. We have 3 cats and they have fallen in before and were able to get out. Not this time. I'm really having a hard time dealing with this. She was 17 and was our first family pet (I know she was old, but she was in super good health and a vibrant, energetic cat). Now we don't know what to do. Can we burry her in the backyard? Now I'm afraid for the other cats to go outside for fear that they might get in the pool. I've never had a pet die before so I am new at this grief. She was a part of our family for nearly my entire life. I don't know what to do. We really don't know what to do with her body. I really am having a hard time thinking about it and don't know what to do.

I'm so sorry for you loss. Losing a pet is very hard. Please know that you're not alone.

If you have a vet near you that does this, you could bring her body there and they would cremate her for you and then you could get the ashes to bury or you could bury her in the backyard.

I'm truly sorry and please feel free to post as often as you need to. We're here for you.

Here is a link to the pet bereavement board here at ivillage, there you will find compassion from other pet lovers and others who have been through the terrible loss of a pet.
