DH found this in our yard the other day. He was a whopper and DID NOT like it when DH touched his shell. He whipped that head around and tried to take one of his fingers off. Yikes.

Those things look prehistoric, don't they. Nice shots. Funny, I have been meaning to post some photos of a snapper that I stumbled upon down at the park near us. It was pretty big although I have seen bigger. It was bigger than the one you had, by looking at the foot in the photo, but I didn't get close enough to get a scale like that, its head was way bigger than my fist even and I didn't want to get too close, it wasn't liking me the way it was. I estimated it to be at least 12 inches across the shell and about 16-17 inches long (just the shell). Here are some shots I got.....

It didn't pull into the shell much at all, more like stared me down daring me to get closer. If it would have opened its mouth, I could have put my fist in there!

Photobucket

I loved all the duckweed all over it....

It eventually decided I wasn't a threat and turned around and walked away from me....

Wow! Those are some really cool photos girls!

Never mind the fingers, I would be careful of those open toe shoes Amy, LOL, ;o) They do look mean!

They say we have huge desert turtles out here but we have never seen one.

TFS!

Awesome pics ladies! They seem so unafraid of people! I'm not sure I've ever seen one in the wild. We have those little box and red eared turtles around here and they're mostly afraid- hiding and tucking when they see people.

DH put his foot next to the turtle before he had attempted to touch him and we realized how quick he could whip around and snap.  Looking back at the pics afterward I thought it was not safe to have his foot that close.
