Veteran's Day is just around the corner (11/11) and while I'm thrilled that I get a day off work, there is obviously a lot more to Veteran's Day than just a day off.  Over the next few days, tell us (as often as you think of someone) about a Veteran that has crossed your life.

The first person that came to my mind is my Grandfather.  We lost him when I was in HS, but he served in WWII.  He was in a supply unit that packed in supplies over the Bermees Mts.  I recently had some of his photos scanned so that they will last longer.  Some of them are fantastic.  He was able to see some amazing places.  I wish the circumstances would have been better.  I don't know if saw combat action as he never spoke of the war with me.  During his time overseas, he missed the birth of his fourth child and his death.  Grandpa and Grandma had also lost another son (my Mom's twin) just after birth.  This was too much for their marriage and it ended a few years later.  I remember my Grandpa as a shrewed business man.  He owned many small apartment buildings and did well for himself and he loved split pea soup.  I still don't like that stuff!! ;0)

mine would have to be my dad.. he served during the korean war.. and while he was mainly based in the united states the whole war,,,   he was always adamant that us kids honor and respect the military world whether we agreed with it or not. HONOR THOSE WHO FOUGHT AND DIED for YOU,,, debbie.. is what i always heard.   my dad did everything in his life with military force.... and he tried to instill that in us his kids... but i think it only stuck with me.

I thought of another Veteran.

Gerry - a friend and former neighbor.  He served in Vietnam and his life has never been the same.  He was 19 when he was hit by a mortor (friendly fire).  He suffered many many injuries, but the most obvious was permenate blindness.  You can see on his arm and leg that the doctors did their best to put him back together, but there wasn't enough flesh left to make it look just right.

He doesn't let this ruin his life!!  He enjoys his guide dog and gets out as much as possible.  He met his wife at the VA hospital and they have two children together and I think four grandchildren.  He can have quite the potty mouth, but you can't help but laugh.  And he would serve his country all over again if he could.
