Hey there. This isn't a sexual question, but I always enjoy the answers that are posted here. I hope this isn't too stupid of a question, but I'm kind of an over 30 late bloomer.

What determines boyfriend/girlfriend status as we get older? Are two people who "date" boyfriend/girlfriend? Is it sex?

I dated a guy twice when I was younger, then dated and married my ex-husband. Now, i'm single and dating a great guy (who's almost 50), but I always say he's the guy I'm dating. Today, someone in our club asked me where my boyfriend was. I kind of stammered a little in my response!

Generally I wouldn't use the word boyfriend or girlfriend unless the couple has actually discussed their status. If you've discussed being exclusive, then it would be proper to call him your boyfriend. If you haven't discussed it, then you can't be sure what the fact that you're dating actually means. Just having sex doesn't mean anything, since without a talk about being exclusive or about the status of your relationship, the other person could consider it a very casual situation with no commitment implied at all.

Hi there,

I'd say its basically each to their own situation and interpretation.

Some would refer to him as a boyfriend others wouldn't.

Personally, i guess i would assume he is my boyfriend if we are exclusively dating and intimate... I think exclusivity is more implied with actions rather than words, but some would say actually stated 'we are exclusive' is imperative otherwise its open for interpretation.

I once heard a funny story where a couple were not only dating but living together. She walked in on him in her bed wit another woman an he said...what's the problem.....we aren't exclusive.... LOL

If dating, sharing ones house and bed doesn't imply exclusive then i cant fathom what does.... Thus, I think many people use that as an excuse if they stray..... its a pretty weak one in my opinion...... In this case i say actions speak louder than the "exclusivity talk".
