Researchers now say that a safe and effective male contraceptive could be available in the next 3-5 years (options that could be available include a pill to be taken orally, patch or gel applied to the skin, and injection given every 3 months). Do you think a male birth control pill is a good idea? Would you ask your partner to take it?

I think it's a great idea to have a reliable male contraceptive. It would go a long way to protect men from being "oopsed" by dishonest partners and having 2 people on contraceptive should really help prevent accidental pregnancies. But I would NEVER rely on a man to have the only contraceptive - I would still use something myself.

Well, it's a moot point for us since DH has had a vasectomy.

I don't think I would trust DH enough to be responsible for taking hormonal birth control, unless it were long-lasting - once a month or less frequently. Since I'm the one who would have to deal witih an unplanned pregnancy, I just don't think I could leave that task to him on a daily basis.

Sounds like a great idea, and I have to agree with the two points that posters brought up.  While it is great for men to take so that they don't have to subject themselves to being "oops-ed" by their partners, it is also important for women to take responsibility for their own birth control because they, in the end, are the ones who end up with the pregnancy.

But I think for stable couples who have the trust, it's a great idea.  Also, some women can't take birth control for health reasons so it gives them another option, again providing they have a trustworthy partner.
