When I spotted this story I thought it would immediately make a great discussion.  What do you think of Planned Parenthood offering GC's?  Would you give them as gifts?  What would you think if you received one?

INDIANAPOLIS - Christmas for many is the season of giving. At Planned Parenthood of Indiana, it's about giving the gift of health care and contraception.
The network of 35 health centers across Indiana has begun offering holiday gift certificates for basic health care services "or the recipient's choice of birth control method," it announced this week.
Nearly 800,000 Indiana residents don't have health insurance and can't afford basic health services such as Pap tests and breast exams, President and CEO Betty Cockrum said.
"This is about basic health care, and potentially lifesaving health care," Cockrum said.
Planned Parenthood's health centers perform nearly 1,000 Pap tests each week, and about 10 percent reveal findings that require follow-ups to more accurately detect or prevent cervical cancer, she said.

personally I think it's great. Women have been putting health care at the bottom of the list. It would make a great gift for someone who doesn't have health insurance and wants to get checked out. For the opposition to sit and complain that they can be used for abortions and focus solely on that is ignorance. They think of PP as a giant abortion clinic but yet don't realize that women, especially low income women, go in there to get checked out, tested, screenings and even prenatal type care.

Go PP!

edited to add:..did i really say go pp? :P

Hmmmm, I don't think they would be good gift certificates in the traditional sense of "here's your Christmas gift". But, they would be great for a relative or pastor who knew of someone who needed services and couldn't afford them. I would give them to someone in need *if* I knew they were looking for a way to get the services *and* had no issues with PP (whether I agree or not, everyone has a right to their views and I wouldn't want anyone to feel they had to violate their conscience to get health services.) If it were given to me, I'd thank the giver, but tell them I have health insurance and enough money to afford to pay for what it doesn't cover, but may I donate this back to PP for someone who can't.

I think they're great but I think unfortunately it's going to be overshadowed by abortion.

Pap smears save lives!!! I can attest to that personally.

When will everyone, including people who aren't necessarily opposed to abortion but just in the dark about women's health issues (NOT just pregnancy and childbirth), get that through their thick little skulls?

I think it's a good idea. When I didn't have health insurance, I went there for my pap smear and birth control. While in the waiting room, a teen girl came in for an exam/bc control and didn't have the money to pay. I'm sure that some teens I know would rather skip it than to go and not pay something. A gift cert. would be great for them. I can think of at least one teen girl I know that might find it useful.

I think a PP had a great idea when she suggested giving one to a pastor to pass on to someone in need. With all the food pantries and charities that are providing help for so many, I'm sure some of them would have people to pass it on to. Maybe women's shelters could use them as well.
