Yesterday while waiting to pick my child up at school, a mother was standing next to her car with a young boy that was about 3 yrs old. the child accidently stepped on her foot and she proceeded to cuss him saying "GD" and the "f" word. I wanted to say something, but was speechless (a rare moment for me). How would you handle this if at all? I felt obligated to let the lady know that her behavior and treatment of the child was unacceptable. For all I know this child wasn't even hers. If my sitter were speaking to my child that way, I would want to know.

Sheesh!  I think I might have been speechless, too.  But now that you've put this into my head, if it happens to me, I'll be slightly prepared.  If the child had been older, I'd do something like looking directly at the child and saying "Wow.  Your Mom must be having a really bad day to have said something like THAT!"  But I think since the child was so young, I would have said "I'd appreciate it if you watch your language when MY kids are around, please."

On another note, I am trying to get up the guts to walk up to one of those people who park right next to the curb, stick out my hand and say "Thank you.  I've always wanted to meet the most important person in the world, and now I have."

Really, there should be some etiquette when you pick your kid up at school. Everyone else is busier than you or more important than you. I was trying to back out of a parking space being very cautious because kids were around and a lady behind me was blowing her horn like a maniac. I thought I was getting ready to run over a kid (stopping several times and looking around) and as it turns out she was blowing her horn to get her own kid's attention. I also love the parents that just want to drive through to get their kid instead of parking in the spaces available so when I'm ready to back out I have a mile long train and no room to back out.

As for the verbal abuse thing... a friend encountered a mom in a store spanking and screaming at her kid. My friend was so disgusted by the mom's behavior that she LIED to the mom and told her that she was with children's services and was going to get her tag number of her car to identify her and made the woman promise that it wouldn't happen again. You have to wonder... if people treat their children like that in public, what happens behind closed doors. Everyone wants to blame the demise of our children on society. I'm sorry... to a very large degree it is the parents.
