not getting married doesn't HAVE to mean independence, missing out on that feeling of belonging to something bigger, "the sense of being permanently rooted to a place and a person." in other words, you can have your life permanently rooted with another person's without being married. you don't need a piece of paper to have that kind of permanent and intimate connection with another person.
