The H1N1 flu is getting pretty widespread.  The vaccine is just now starting to become available.  What are you and your SO doing to protect yourselves?  Do you plan on taking the vaccine when it is available?  If not, how do you plan to take safety measures when you are out so you dont bring a bug into your home?

I know where I live, the schools are being really hit hard.  I live in a very rural area, so this truly does surprise me.  I also know of quite a few ivillige members that post on other boards that have the H1N1 in their home.  A friend up north has her father in intensive care from H1N1 and now three others, encluding herself, has tested positive for H1N1.  This flu can and does affect all of us, and in doing so, it affects our loved ones.  Do you have a plan?  If so, what do you intend to do?

I, personally, am just waiting for the vaccine..trying not to go out very much until it gets here.  I have a compromised immune system and I am one of those that is at medical risk if I come down with it.  So, in my house, we will take the vaccine.  I would love to hear your thoughts about how you protect yourself and your SO.

SO and I are healthy, and don't seem to have compromised immune systems. I have not been too worried about H1N1, because it's essentially just the same old flu. I have heard mixed things about the H1N1 vaccine, some people are saying it's causing more harm than good -- especially the kind that goes in via the nose. I have a lot of disinfecting wipes and disinfecting spray around to make sure the doorknobs, faucets, etc. are germ free. Not to mention cellphones, keyboards, and all that kind of stuff.

SO and I are in our mid-20s so we're not really at an elevated risk. I haven't had any strain of flu in at least a decade, myself... I've never had a flu shot before either so I'm not going to go out of my way for a vaccine against something I'm not particularly worried about. A coworker's daughter had H1N1 and recovered in 4 days . It seems that you'll either get it or you won't, just like "normal" strains of the virus, and even if you do get it you'll miss a couple of days of work and recover eventually. I can understand young kids and older people or those with immunodeficiency wanting to take extra measures against it, definitely.

The flu has been pretty bad around here already this year. I had the flu (not sure if it was H1N1 or not since they didn't test for H1N1) back at the end of September, beginning of October. I was sick and miserable for 2 weeks and was having trouble breathing (I'm asthmatic). During the time I was sick, my DH and DS kept at a safe distance.

I received the H1N1 vaccine at work already. My DS will be getting it once his school's start giving it out (they are already planning to, just waiting to get the vaccine). DH will get his when the Army tells him to (he's getting a lot of other vaccinations right now, so the H1N1 vaccine is pretty low on the list of ones he needs).
