I saw this news story online and thought it was worthy of an interesting discussion.  What do you think of Planned Parenthood offering GC's for the holidays?  Would you give one?  What would you think if you received one?

http://www.usatoday.com/money/economy/2008-11-27-1973586458_x.htm

INDIANAPOLIS - Christmas for many is the season of giving. At Planned Parenthood of Indiana, it's about giving the gift of health care and contraception.
The network of 35 health centers across Indiana has begun offering holiday gift certificates for basic health care services "or the recipient's choice of birth control method," it announced this week.
Nearly 800,000 Indiana residents don't have health insurance and can't afford basic health services such as Pap tests and breast exams, President and CEO Betty Cockrum said.
"This is about basic health care, and potentially lifesaving health care," Cockrum said.
Planned Parenthood's health centers perform nearly 1,000 Pap tests each week, and about 10 percent reveal findings that require follow-ups to more accurately detect or prevent cervical cancer, she said.

Now THAT is a subject line that caught my eye!!! :)

I'm all for ANY way of reducing healthcare and prescription costs. A gift certificate to CVS could be used for prescriptions and their Minute Clinic, right? I've had a lot of friends, especially in college, who used PP for their OB-GYN needs - because without insurance, their cost was much more reasonable than other doctor's offices.

I'm all for empowering people to take control of their healthcare.

Wow.  I'm kind of floored.

I'm pro-Planned Parenthood.  I think they do a lot of good for a lot of people who would be in trouble without them.  However, I have to say, I think this is completely inappropriate.  I would never give one, nor would I accept one as a gift.  I would actually be beyond insulted if someone gave me one.  In my opinion, if you are close enough to someone that you would give them a gift certificate for such personal procedures (Pap or abortion, whatever one chooses to use it for) then it would be far more appropriate to confront them and say "I'm concerned about your well-being and would like to pay for you to visit a doctor" or something along those lines.  You know?  Not send them a Hallmark moneyholder with a gift certificate to Planned Parenthood!!!!!

Geez.  Talk about an awkward gift to feign excitement over.  Bad enough pretending you love that ugly sweater...

Tacky, tacky, tacky!!!

I would never give this to someone as a gift.  I think it's even a little disgusting for a gift idea to be honest, and would make an inappropriate gift in almost ANY situation.  JMHO.

If I were a parent, family member, or friend of someone who I believed was in desperate need of such services for some reason beyond their control, I might just give them money to buy such things or take them to PP myself.

But for the most part, I think this is something that any sexually active adult needs to take care of themselves and it should be a big priority for them.  If they can't pay for contraception they don't need to be having sex.  I think if they are that irresponsible that they can't even keep up with their PP needs they probably wouldn't even do it with a gift certificate anyway.

JMHO and I truly don't want to offend.

ITA Kate!

I would be SO offended if someone gave me a PP gift certificate...even if I was a poor college student or teen.  It's just not appropriate at all IMO.
