I'm thinking about visiting with a dog to adopt this weekend. I had really planned to hold off on adopting until the spring because I didn't want to start with a dog during the cold months and short days, but I was looking online today and fell in love with this sweet tuxedo pit bull. He's about a year old and is housetrained, which is pretty essential for me. At this point, I don't have a schedule appropriate for a puppy or a dog that needs to be housetrained.

Disclaimer: I know many people do not like pit bulls, but I feel strongly about rescuing one. There are so many in Baltimore that are abused/used in fights and then killed in shelters. Other breeds go flying out of the shelters. I've been around a lot of them that have been rescued and they are really the sweetest, most misunderstood dogs.

Has anyone else rescued a dog and gone through the adoption process? This guy is unique because he isn't in a shelter. He's been living with the people who found him on the street and they posted an ad through the local shelter and started a blog about him. I like that because it gives a better picture of what he will be like in a home.

Any tips? Things to think about? Questions to ask myself before I go look and fall in love? ;)

I just recently (as in within the past year) sort of rescued a dog.  He was with a family that couldn't take care of him anymore, so I met him and fell in love and now he's mine.  I have to say though, while I don't regret my decision at all, I really, REALLY forgot how much work goes into giving a dog a good home.  I forgot about all the expenses and time and energy that goes into it.

Like I said, I don't regret it at all, but there are certainly times (like when he wants to play at 9PM and I want to sit and do nothing) when I'm like omg I really wish I considered this more.

*And for the record, any "extra" thought probably wouldn't have changed my mind anyway! :)

Good luck!!

I like pit bulls as well, but they are a dominate breed. I would ask about dog aggression, how old he is, if he has mouthed and how they dealt with it, and then I would ask about quirks and health.

It's nice because he is not a shelter so they will know alot more about him, but how he acts for you may not be how he acted for them.

I'm sure you know if you are ready for a dog or not, and if you have the schedule to take care, walk, train and have time to love him/her. :-)

I have a sweet story for you....My son who lives in Colorado was moving and could not find anyone to adopt his tan and white Pitt Bull. Duke was 9 months old at the time.

My son was devastated and called me in Fla. and asked if he could ship him to me via airplane.

Well at the time my fiance and I had just put down our very old and sick Basset Hound and George was adamant about not getting another dog.

I finally persuaded him to let me take Duke. 8 Years later, and those two are inseparable. He loves that dog and vice a versa.

Duke would have defiantly been put on death row because of the stigma people have about Pitts.

One afternoon when I was at the store, George went to the mailbox (long walk down our driveway), and he fell in the road. Duke never left his side and waited with him until a man in his truck drove up the road and helped him.  You see, months before that George had a heart attack and a stroke.

I swear that dog will not let George out of his sight. (not even to pee). Ha! Ha! For real!

Duke is the kindest, sweetest dog we have ever owned and would never hurt a fly. He loves kittens and puppies and kids. He's a real lover boy. He even has white angel wings on the  rear of his back. :)

I would most defiantly consider getting that dog. We'll never regret that we did. Hugs, Lu  :)

Thanks Kate :)

I am a little nervous about the expenses. Seems like there are always unexpected vet bills or extra things here and there. But I think it will be worth it! I am so excited to have a dog again!
