Is even one bruise caused by a spouse one to many? Is 3 or 4? Does it matter what it took to get the bruise there?
If a husband grabs your arms so tight it leaves bruises, is that abuse?
What if he is trying to make his point so clear that he takes his index finger and repeatedly pokes you in the upper chest and front shoulder area to the point you have several small bruises, does that constitute abuse?
Is mental abuse feeling so afraid if you do something wrong the next time will be worse?
Does you spouse being so mad at you and punching a hole in the wall constitute mental abuse?
Is throwing things at you abuse if they don't hit you?
I know all of this sounds really stupid but I am struggling with this.
I know many people on this board have suffered abuse that I could never imagine. And I'm so so sorry for their pain.
But I want to leave my husband but I am afraid. Should I be?
He's very controlling, I'm not allowed to buy groceries, or go shopping alone, I'm not allowed to visit my family without him. I know he has a controlling nature. I'm afraid and I don't even know if I should be.

Hey there taylor, what Ms. Beth has told you is right and I agree w/her 200%

If you are asking those kinds of questions, then you know it consitutes as abuse and you need to contact the local DV center asap or better yet, contact the dv hotline at 800.799.SAFE and they can talk to you and point you in the right direction. You can also look at the board website for lots of helpful information as well. It's down in my sigline, just click on "dealing with domestic abuse & helpful resources" and it will take you directly to the site.

You don't have to go through this alone, there is hope, and there is help. (((HUGS)))

Please pardon the hat, I'm signed in on both boards.....

Taylor, hon, everything you have described is abuse.  It's amazing how abusers break down our intuition until we can't trust anything we feel anymore.  Yes, your fear is justified, and your wanting to leave is justified.  No one deserves to live under a partner's control.  No one deserves bruises, or objects thrown at or near them.

I'm so glad you've found us.  If you can somehow get in touch with a DV center or shelter, they can help you set up an escape plan.  Don't tell him you're thinking of leaving, he'll only crack down harder.  Feel free to post, vent, whatever, but keep us updated.  Huges and best wishes.
