Thanks to all your wonderful vibes, i got the new apartment :o) I am moving TOMORROW (ah!). I have a question though:

My two roommates and i put in our 30 day notice and we are required to pay until 11/26. After i dropped off the deposit i discovered that i didn't have to move into the new apartment so soon, but i decided to just bite the bullet and do it since A) i hate that transition period when all your stuff is just sitting around in disarray B) my friend with a truck is in town for a week and would play a pivotal (if not irreplaceable) role in helping with my move C) i don't want to move close to Thanksgiving and D) i'm sort of done with my roommates.

On a whim i posted a temporary sublease ad on criagslist for my room - just for the remainder of the lease thinking i could save myself a few hundred dollars. A handful of people have inquired and one in particular wants to check out the place tonight and to move in immediately just for the month.

My question is: Should i bother to sublease? It's only for 3ish weeks and it saves me money, but a lot could go wrong (e.g. they totally trash the place, they don't want to move when the time comes, etc). Should i just eat the cost or should i take the chance and sublease?

Thanks for the advice :)

For three weeks, I wouldn't. More importantly, read your original lease. I know every lease I've ever had for an apartment expressly said that I was NOT allowed to lease to anyone else without the consent of the landlord.

Just thought of this though - it's what I did when I moved from Miami. If you can find someone that is willing to rent the place right away, maybe your landlord can cut you some slack on your lease? For my Miami apt., I found someone that wanted to move in the day I wanted to leave, without even wanting the place cleaned or anything. My landlord didn't end up making me pay the rest of the month's rent because I found a replacement to pick up the slack. Maybe you could find someone that wants to rent long term, and ask if your landlord can just set up a new lease.

Grace,

I second Erin's opinions. Sub-leasing is tricky, and it's definitely something you should run by your landlord first.

When we were in London, Claudio and I moved out 2 weeks before our lease was up. But our landlord agreed to cut the lease short if we found someone else to move in (we didn't find anyone, but at least he had given us that option).
