My question would be...where does she go from here? Most parents give their children a little bit of independence at a time. Gradually increasing the luxury when the child proves they are responsible enough for more. She gave him the whole hog at one time. Now it's going to be, "I proved I can ride the subway alone- I wanna go to a rock concert in Jersey by myself." What 'parent card' does she play then? Yes, the child did prove he was responsible enough and mature enough to handle himself in this situation- but now what?

I'm wondering how the Today show found out about this story.  Did the mother blog about it or something?  I'm also wondering how letting your 9 yo wander the streets of Manhattan is acceptable, yet the mother who left her sleeping 2 yo in a car within sight with the car running and doors locked, gets arrested.

Dora is only what= 7 or 8?  She goes all over the freakin place without parents!  Heck- Diego isn't old enough to drive a car- but he scales trees and plays with Jaguars and Pumas and do we ever see HIS parents?

If they can fly planes and use ziplines in the rainforest and climb ancient pyramids for treefrogs and paddle canoes in the amazon- then why can't this 9 year old make it through the city?

I hope you all know I am posting this totally to be silly.  I know I haven't posted for a while on here.  Just had to put that out there though.  I know I am not the only one who thinks this!!!!

Well, I know part of the discussion was city vs. suburban.  A lot of older kids in NYC have to ride public transportaion to get to school.  It is considered the norm, and while I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it with my dd, would I really keep her locked up in the house with me if I lived in a big city?  Kids play outside...Mom's don't need to attend their every move if they are taught properly and are with a group of kids that can be there to watch out for each other.  It's not like we live in Mexico city where child kidnappings top out at 25 per day.

However:  my concern is still a numbers game.  There are 30 houses in a half mile radius of my house.  If 1% of them are dangerous to my child...that means .6 ppl who live here are a threat.  If we lived in NYC, where the adult number could be as high as 16,800 per .5 miles in Manhattan, that means 168 possible predators where my child plays.  That's not including those from other neighborhoods, or those who are homeless.  That's a risk I am not willing to make.  Perhaps if she had followed him close behind, or had other reliable adults at checkpoints along the way...I just don't think she thought this through very well.

Good points!

I'd bet those horrible 3rd graders that plotted against their teacher could handle a city trek... now that would be a story!
