Is the commissary cheaper?

Well my husband is retired military, and he works in the civilian sector.  But as with alot of people his job is iffy at this point.  So I am doing everything I can to cut back and save and be prepared just in case he is layed off.

I was wondering if you ladies thought the grocerys were cheaper at the commissary then at the civilian grocery stores.

What I have been feeling is that some of the civilian grocery stores are running some fairly good sales to try to keep competitive, and if you use those sales along with using coupons that you can usually find some good deals.

I have found the commissary is cheaper on some things but not all things.

What are you feelings on the subject?  Appreciate your input.

I think it is cheaper especially for meats. When we buy chicken (the same local stuff we can get at the grocery store) it is half the price. Other things we buy on a regular basis like instant oatmeal ($1.90 a box) baked potato chips ($1.00 off marked price) it really adds up.

I hope that helps.

I think it depends on a multitude of factors. First and foremost do you live close to a base with a commissary? If the answer is yes, then I would say the Commissary is a great resource and can be extremely helpful in cutting costs. But to drive over 30 mins or more to get to a commissary, with gas prices they way they are, I'm not sure there is any benefit if you have a grocery store within 10 or 15 mins of your house. Second, I think the saving's, no matter what, lie primarily in HOW and WHAT you buy and whether or not you meal plan. I know when I meal plan, I save money. When I don't meal plan and just shop for whatever, I spend significantly more. This is how I look at shopping at the commissary for me and my family. If I lived farther away, I probably wouldn't bother because while here (NJ) it definitely costs more for me to shop off base, the saving's would just be eaten up by paying more for gas....

I've found around here it is a lot cheaper for me to go to the commissary. I usually make one big trip to the commissary where I get all of meats and pantry staples and then I just hit the local store (which is closer) when I run out of milk, bread, and produce throughout the month. Doing it this way, my grocery bill has gone down a lot from what it used to be.

Last month, when I made my big trip, I was expecting to pay $200. With all of the sales they were having and all of the coupons I was able to pick up in store, I only spent about $150.

Btw...as awful as it is to go to a commissary around payday, the few times I have made the mistake here, I noticed they have REALLY good sales around then. You could also ask someone at the commissary what day they usually run their sales. Sometimes, on slower days, they have more sales to draw people in.

I just stated going with my husband in October (we got married on Oct 2nd). I am impressed how much cheaper it is! I bought some romaine lettuce and it was only around .66, where as at the grocery store, it would have been $1.00 - $1.50. Avacadoes were cheaper, too.
