I know this may sound shallow, but I've been with my boyfriend for 3 years and in those 3 years he has gained a significant amount of weight.  Is there any polite way to tell him that he needs to lose a few pounds without hurting his feelings?  I have tried to bring up the subject by telling him that I need to lose some weight and that I would like his help.  I also try suggesting that we start getting more active, but these hints have not worked.  What is a good way to approach this topic?

Welcome to the board lovesurestinks,

There is no easy way to address this issue in my opinion.

I know Dr Phil addresses in his book: Relationship Rescue - you might try it.

Advice is what we ask for when we already know the answer but wish we didn't.

I'm considerably heavier now than I was when I met my SO. Yes, a lot of that is due to my little boy, but some of it is because we got comfortable and cosy, and it just crept up.

This is a really delicate situation. I think your best bet would be to enrol both of you in a fun activity that you'll both enjoy - ice skating, dance classes, whatever. Pitch it to your BF as something fun to do together.

The other thing is this - do you think he's unaware that he's gained weight?

From my understanding, men aren't nearly as paranoid as most women about body comments. If he's like a normal bloke, what about saying "Gee, you've put on some kilos lately"

I dunno, it depends on the man. I think mine would be really hurt if I said 'you're looking skinny lately' (he's a weight trainer and skinny = bad)
