I joined a gym this weekend--they were having a $99 for a year special--you really can't get much cheaper than that. My DD belongs when she is home for the summer and she goes to the local branch at college. My 1st exH also belongs and takes DS--kids under 16 can't have their own membership so he has to go w/ an adult. I was thinking that this was another thing I really couldn't do when I was married to exH2--he never exercised cause he worked 55 hrs a week, so by the time he got home, he was dead tired. Plus I never really liked leaving him home w/ the kids. Well, I went 3 days in a row. The hard part is figuring out how to fit it in on work days since I have to come home & cook dinner.

Hey Music....Kudo's to you!! Ive joined a few different gyms a few different times...and I cant seem to keep motivated to keep going. I hope you keep it up because you will feel soo much better and stronger. Maybe you can make a few friends there and that will help you to keep it up, that may have been my problem IM a little shy so its hard for me to make friends..but if I had a work out buddy IM sure I'd still be going. Good Luck to you! Mary

This seems like the kind of place where people don't really talk to each other. The gyms I have belonged to before had classes, like aerobics, that I used to do, so if you saw the same people all the time in class, it would give the opportunity to talk. This gym is cheap because it doesn't have any classes and I'm no longer in the shape to be able to do aerobics anyway, so I think it would be kind of weird to be on the treadmill & just start talking to someone. What I think will be hard is when it gets cold because when I get in the house, I don't want to leave it again at night, but hopefully by then I'll be used to doing it.

Hooray for you, Music! I'm so impressed! That's a heckuva bargain, too!

As for finding time, I will pass along something I learned from a workout CD I used for years, and which really helped me: Set up a hard and fast time to work out and then do not think of it as negotiable. I remember this program said something like, "You don't question whether you'll brush your teeth in the morning, do you?" I found this worked for me.

The other tip I got from this program--be prepared to wince--was to work out first thing in the morning. I HATE getting up in the morning, and at first thought I couldn't possibly get up earlier than I was. But I grimly set my alarm for five a.m. and then wouldn't let myself think about it. If I waited to work out until after work, there were too many variables and interruptions. After a few years, I quit doing the workout DVD and started running. I am not a runner and often say I have stumpy little grape-stomping legs, but it gave me a more aerobic workout, as well as some fresh air, and I found I looked forward to the quiet of the very early morning.

I am now walking, as I developed shin splints last fall. However, I'd join a gym if I could. I'm really happy for you!

Good for you! I have a membership to our local pool and its sports facilities but it has been almost a year since I have been there. I used it a lot when I was living with the EX. I am sure you will meet some other people there if not while on the machines at least in the locker room. Because I went at a time very early in the morning I was always with women who could be my mother or grandmother. They were the ones to start the conversations if just to say hello, or we noticed you didnīt make it last Friday...
I agree with Julie it is better to workout in the morning. You will find that you have more energy throughout the day. I have also worked out by DVDīs and videos at home. Takes a lot of motivation and commitment to do those. I found that I preferred to be around other people.
If you decide to go for an afternoon workout maybe you can get your DS to go with you and you will have more bonding time. As he is getting older you may find that he wonīt be home very often and it will be one of the very few times you get to see him. He is like my son still at the stage half child/ half teenager. By next year they wonīt be the same.
