I realize that I shouldn't complain when a lot of people don't have jobs, but my boss is driving me nuts. He is single and my age. I actually used to have a crush on him when I first started working here, 12 yrs ago. That is really gone.

He doesn't come to work until the afternoon (usually around 2:00). He stays long enough to talk to some clients. We can only make an appt. w/ clients for the p.m. for him because he can't manage to get up in the a.m. I don't know what he does--it's not like he has kids to take care of. I assume he hangs out & goes to the gym or stuff like that. Then if there are no clients, he'll take a walk to the grocery store next door. He will actually ask the secretaries to cook food for him--they are Chinese (from China) so they are too polite to say no, where an American secretary would be insulted & say that it's not part of her job. Every day he calls up around 11:00 a.m. to ask what is going on. Now if there was some emergency, I would call him. Or if it's something general, it can wait til he gets in. Most of the time, I say "nothing." Today he called twice and since it's 3:00, I guess he's not calling in.

Now he wants me to write an appeal for a ticket he got. His car failed inspection and he kept driving it because he thought he had a certain time to get it fixed--they changed the rules and apparently you have to get whatever it is fixed before you can drive. So he basically has no grounds to appeal except to say "well, I'm a lawyer, but I didn't keep up on the law, so give me a break." That should work. It's only a $40 ticket.

All I can say is "I'm on vacation next week--can't come soon enough."

Do you "have" to file the appeal for him?  I thought the rule was 'ignorance was no excuse' ;)

Yeah for vacation!

Ollie

Ugh. Yucky boss syndrome. I guess it could be worse: he could be hitting on you. :( That doesn't help you, though. And I can't believe that he expects the secretaries to cook his lunch every day! Has he always been this insensitve

How many attorneys are in your office? Is it just you and Mr. Slacker?

Hope you have a great vacation! Are you going anywhere, or just staying home? Will your son be in school by then, or will you get some vacation time with him?

There is just one other p.t. atty who does immigration & he is really odd. He is 50--he is really unkempt and he talks very loudly. He might know what he is doing, but I think he gives a bad impression--I can't imagine what clients think when they see him. I don't talk to him that much. At various times we have had other lawyers who I liked and could chat with, so now I feel lonely. The girls are all nice though.

I just think Mr. Slacker (I like that) is clueless. Like he doesn't see anything wrong w/ asking someone who was hired to answer phones & type to cook him some lunch. One day he bought this huge bag (maybe 50 lbs.) of Goji berries--they are some health food--so he asked one of the girls to weigh out 1 lb. at a time and put them in plastic bags. She was kind of laughing cause she new how absurd it was.

We are going to Cape Cod for a couple of days (leaving later today). We have to be back on Tues cause DD has her last class for summer school, then she goes back to college on Sat. DS starts school on 9/2.

Ew...Mr. Slacker would be bad enough, but you also have to deal with Pigpen? You're really kind of the Voice of Normalcy in that office, aren't you? Sounds kind of lonely to me.

I went to Cape Cod a few times back when I lived in MA (3 decades ago). I loved it, especially those stretches where you can see ocean from both sides of the road. And the seafood! Bay scallops! Clams! The farthest I ever got on the Cape was Chatham. I always wanted to get to Provincetown, but it took hours just to get to Chatham. I hope you and DS have a wonderful time together.
