NO WAY!  I occassionally leave my 8 yr old alone, at home, doors locked, w/ the 2 dogs, in a VERY safe neighborhod - for no more than 1/2 hr at a time. AND 1/2 the time we chat via phone the whole time Im gone, lol. NO WAY IN HELL I would leave her alone in a CITY!  To FIND HER WAY HOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Haha- wow, I WOULD'VE done that when I was 9!!!

Would I let my son do that? No.

Would I let him stay home alone? Yes.  In fact, we're just starting to learn this now- he's been allowed to stay home alone (1 hour) twice.  He was great- just has to learn to answer the phone LOL!

Next school year he will be walking home alone and be alone for 2 hours.  He will be going two blocks and required to call when he gets home.  Again, the phone will be the issue- he'll likely need a lot of reminders to CALL when he gets home LOL!

I used to walk 10 blocks home in the downtown area of a big metropolitan city and be home alone for 3 hours at age 9.  I also used to wander around and take the city bus on my own...

How old is he Al?  X FLIPPED the other nite when he heard Ave walks home ... TWO blocks. If i stand in my driveway, i can see the school.

But Im still afraid to let her walk home & then me not be there - unless I am literally on my way home. I sleep some afternoons & I always still set me alarm for 2:30 b/c i worry "what if something happens on her way home & i just sleep till 5pm & dont KNOW till 5?" so, i have to wake up, make sure shes ok, then go back to sleep! She was 8 in Feb & is VERY mature (as you guys know, lol) - but still, other moms thinks its horrible she stays alone for 30 min, sometimes 45. But shoot, some of my friends leave their kids that age as well, so I guess Im in the middle.
