...at half mast.  It was hard to try to explain to DS11 last night as we were watching the news.  How do you explain it?

This might be slightly controversial but what else is new with my posts right?
SYB's sister actually knew the shooter from yesterday. She worked with him while he was at Walter Reed. She was quite upset. Told us he struck her as a normal guy very interested in post traumatic stress issues...So when DS asked us what was going on we used it as an opportunity to talk about mental disorders, depression, and the importance of medical intervention. The premise of our talk is that when someone we know can do something this horrible having seemed perfectly normal, we all need to better understand and support one another - and that when someone is troubled, they need to absolutely ask for help no matter how dark their thoughts are. He totally GOT it and it was a great talk for us all to have with that personal connection in there.

That's a really good message. Mental illness shouldn't be kept in the dark. You just have to assume that this guy had some kind of mental problem, which is pretty ironic, considering he's a psych. But my 2nd DH has bipolar disorder. He wouldn't allow me to tell the kids, which I never should have agreed to. He did take medication & go to counseling, so I guess he figured he could "hide" it, but it wasn't totally under control. So instead of learning about it and knowing that sometimes K couldn't control his behavior because of this disease, they just ended up thinking he was a jerk who yelled a lot. I can't see how he thought this was better.

& you know what really makes me so sad? That he was Muslim.  The innocent Muslim people in this country have had to deal with SO much as it is ... I almost wish he were something, ANYthing other than Muslim  :(

The fortunate thing at my house is my kids haven't seen anything about it. My oldest son is there and called me to let me know he was fine while on lock down. I wouldn't want my children to know about it and worry so I haven't really spoken of it at all.
