The manufacturer of acne medication, Accutane, announced it will be pulling the medication off the market due to the noted volatility of its side effects.  Here’s a reliable news source who outlined the specifics of Accutane’s removal from the market:

Successfully finding a product that produces the skin-clearing results you desire starts with knowing what your “true” skin type is. The only reason I mention this is because it sounds like you experienced pronounced irritation as a result of over-drying with products containing the active ingredients Benzoyl Peroxide (Proactive) and Salicylic Acid (Neutrogena), both recognized for their stated acne-clearing effects. Your skin’s reaction to these ingredients, if you have a normal-to-dry skin type, is the stimulation and over production of surface oils to compensate for stripping your skin’s natural oils.

On the other hand, if your skin has always over-produced oil, causing the acne you’ve experienced in the past, you’re obviously going to want stick with an oil-free moisturizer, or a hyaluronic acid supplement to boost your skin’s level of hydration.

As you know, there are a number of skin care lines that tout superiority in their ability to clear acne-ridden skin, but there are a few products and product lines that I would recommend specifically:

For Normal-to-Oily Skin:

The MURAD – Acne Complex Kit is a daily skin care regimen that features Retinol and arnica in their hydrating lotion to help reduce redness and irritation potentially caused by the active ingredient, salicylic acid, in the cleanser.

HYALURONIC ACID is an excellent topical hydrator that leaves your skin feeling light and fresh, here’s my recommendation, manufactured by SkinMedica:

For Normal-to-Oily and Normal-to-Dry:

Obagi CLENZIderm contains a patented solubilized form of 5% benzoyl peroxide that penetrates to the root of the follicle, preventing acne where it starts. It’s an easy 3-step skincare regimen.

Normal-to-Oily:

Normal-to-Dry:

I hope this information finds you happy and healthy!  Take care and best of luck.

I'm 41 and the only thing that has ever kept me zit-free is birth control pills.  I'm on Yaz now and my skin looks great.  I also splurged on a Clarisonic and it's made my skin very silky smooth and dare I say glowing.  It's about $200 but if you get it on QVC there is a 30 day return policy.  You can try it and see if it works for you.

Hi Daizzebelle,

It might be a good idea to go back to the dermatologist. There are more topical and oral meds than only Accutane for serious acne.

Possibly it is due to an hormonal imbalance. Since you refer to the acne as a teenager and the fact that after your pregnancies your skin has been great for a while.

I have had acne as well in my early 40s and since I am on a different oral contraceptive my skin is great again (currently on Yazmin). Still sensitive though free from breakouts and easy to take care with over the counter skinproducts.

Best wishes, hope it is much better soon!

I just heard lately that Accutane is no longer prescribed or for sale.  It had some very nasty side effects and I'm surprised it had been available as long as it was!

You may consider going back to the dermatologist and getting on antibiotics and differin. Since Ive used these I have been clear! If you want to try different products be sure to keep track of the acne ingredient in that product. The reason being you dont want to keep trying several brands and thinking they arent helping when its really the same ingredient in a different bottle. Also be sure that if your acne is active to avoid using abrasive cleansers. This can spread the bacteria and result in more breakouts. DDF makes a great sulfur mask that also helps a lot. Hope this helps.
