In addition to the health risks, drinking alcohol can make you look older than your years. I'm not referring only to over drinking, but light drinking on a regular basis or binge drinking now and then can have a significant impact on your appearance. A glass of red wine every night with a meal is actually beneficial for heart health. More than one glass (4oz.) reverses the benefits all together. But I'm not referring to red wine, I'm talking about cocktails made with hard liquor.
The main cause of aging skin due to drinking is cause by the dehydration alcohol causes. Even in small doses alcohol dries out the body which forces the body to get it's hydration from other areas. You may notice after a night of drinking how you look drawn, tired, dry, bags under your eyes or puffy eyes.....this is all due to an imbalance of your bodies' hydration.
Alcohol causes blood vessels on the skin to expand, going back to normal only AFTER the alcohol is flushed from the body. This gives your skin a patchy redish appearance.
The most significant affect of alcohol to the skin is through malnutrition. Alcohol will deplete the body of vitamins and minerals necessary to give your skin the glow you want. Vitamin-A and other antioxidants are depleted leaving the skin starved for nutrition, making it look dull, gray, lack luster and in some cases even yellow.
It's good to remember that as we age we do not bounce back as quickly as we used to. One night of drinking one too many drinks can have an affect on your appearance for much longer than just the following morning. I have a little trick that works quite nicely. When I'm out for the evening and want to have a drink or two I make sure to drink double the ounces of water to alcohol after each cocktail. This substantially cuts down on the dehydration affect. It's still best to stick to water all together though. http://www.beautiful-radiant-skin.blogspot.com
Alcohol's not the only dehydrator out there. Soda, energy drinks, coffee, etc. can all have a dehydrating effect, so unless you want to cut all of those out I wouldn't worry about it too much. If you drink a little alcohol here and there you'll be fine, remember, everything in moderation is fine. I don't agree that drinking a little here and there will permanently damage your skin. Sure you'll be dehydrated till you replenish yourself, but just like your liver, your skin will bounce back as long as you don't make it a habit.
