I got a tattoo on my foot 5 days ago and I had to return to work yesterday. I am in the Army and I am REQUIRED to wear big ol' desert boots for about 10 hours a day. My husband, who has 5 tattoos, told me to put ointment or lotion on it and cover it with saran wrap. That makes sense to me only because it keeps the friection of the boot and thick green sock from rubbing it off. However, it makes little sense to me in every other way imaginable- moisture, bacteria, sweat....all bad right?!? So, aside from putting saran wrap on it, what suggestions do any of you have that will prevent the scab from rubbing off or from the color fading? I had a chunk of the scab kind of slime off last night and I'm worried that it may be because it's too moist from the damn saran wrap! PLEASE HELP!!!

Well it's over and done with but my suggestion would have been to NOT do it until you could give it more time to heal without boots/sweat/germs.

Keeping it wrapped is not a good idea because all it will do is trap the bacteria. Wear good fitting socks and lotion it like normal before putting them on but don't over moisturize it either.

At this point you have to hope that you're a good healer and know that you WILL need touching up on it in the future because feet are one of the hardest spots to heal in the best circumstances and need touching up frequently.

My husband (when not deployed w/ the NG) is a civilian cop... When he got tatted on his chest, his bullet-proof vest constantly rubbed it, but we kept moisturizing it w/ the lotion, and it turned out perfectly - no issues with color! It did flake off scab a lot more then what any of our normal tats did, but I would almost think you would rather have dry scab flake off then a big chunk of wet scab!

I would just wear comfy cotton sock, and try moisturizing it a little extra during the day! You could also just try placing some dry gauze over it w/ some tape to wick moisture away and keep it clean. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice. I've been letting it air out during the day when I don't have Soldiers in my office so I'm not wearing the boot ALL DAY LONG. It is healing up now and healing well despite the fact that I work out like crazy in the am (unavoidable) and I have to be in uniform all day (also unavoidable). I can tell that I'm going to need a little bit of touch up work done when I go home on leave again, but overall I'm satisfied. I think I'm gonna get some gauze because I'm just wearing a boot and socks today and I'm worried that the scab's gonna come off on my sock! I appreciate that y'all took the time to help me!
