Hello,

I've been thinking through a lot of ideas of what I essentially would like to pursue as a career, which would also enable me to start up my own business, and I have stumbled upon interior design. I have a real passion for property and renovating (i actually only wanted to do house flipping) and realized that currently I am not happy pursuing what I have been (I am almost finished my BBA I have 1 year left) I have a passion for business AND interior design and figured this would work out perfectly.

My game plan as of now is to complete my BBA next year and then take a part time certificate course in interior design. This should only take a year. With that I should be able to break into the field and then I can carry on with my technical diploma in interior design. with the experience gained, my BBA, Certificate and Diploma I was thinking of slowly continuing working full time and then starting my own company on the side, and only quit my FT job if it is evident I would be able to sustain a living based on my own business.

I need to know if this sounds silly or not. I kind of feel I have wasted my time with my BBA but feel foolish to not complete it since I have a year left. (I'll be done my BBA at 22 BTW).

The only thing though is that I'm a little weary of changing careers because I'm not sure the market needs interior designers etc (although with my BBA to fall back on, I won't be short on work etc)

what tips or advice could anyone share with me?

I just finished reading a book. The gal began house flipping and ended up a female general contractor.

Your plan does not sound silly at all. There are a ton of statistics out there about career changes. It's not uncommon to change careers. There are also statistics out there on how many people are in the profession there degree is in. Again, it's not uncommon to be in a different career.

Once we get out of school and begin working, most jobs are not 100% just your field. People end up liking something else and peruse that course of work instead of their intended field. It just happens.

The market changes. Look at the market 5 years ago, 10 years ago and 15 years ago. That has to tell you that 5 years from now it will again be different.

I say go for it :)

Your situation is no different from most of the other students. It is completely normal for you to decide for another course since the current one is not working out real well for you. However, I do encourage you to finish your BBA course before pursuing an interior design career. It's practical nowadays to have a secondary career in case the first one doesn't pan out, as you've mentioned in your post. Best of luck with both your careers!
