Hi Mary,
Great question!
I've been a successful Virtual Assistant for over 2 1/2 years (after having been a corporate Executive Assistant for 8+ years) and my definition of a VA is as follows:
"A VA is a micro-business owner who provides business support services while working in long-term collaborative relationships with ONLY carefully selected ideal clients. Using the telephone, a fax machine, email, and various web-based tools, VAs support their clients without ever having to step inside their clients' offices or, in most cases, meet their clients face-to-face.”
If you were running your own Virtual Assistance business, you’d likely find yourself doing many of the same tasks you would do for a boss or manager in the corporate world, except you'd be doing the work for clients YOU choose! You’d be:
- Researching, coordinating and managing travel
- Retrieving messages and returning calls on your clients’ behalf
- Managing their schedule
- Updating and organizing their contact database
- Maintaining a virtual filing system
- Creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations and reports
- Researching and purchasing gifts, etc
You could also expand your service offerings to helping with their marketing efforts, customer service requests, transcription and countless other tasks that help an entrepreneur run their company day to day.
This is the perfect time to enter the Virtual Assistant industry! The economy being what it is, more and more people are choosing to start their own business instead of struggling in corporate America. There are countless opportunities for you to engage new clients and support them, all the while creating a thriving business for yourself. You will only be limited by your imagination and your willingness to learn, grow and try new things. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions!
Best regards,
Sydni
