Mary:

a virtual assistant will do for others things that can be done via internet and phone. For example, I had a client who needed the thank you cards from her baby shower made out. She sent the cards and the list of gifts received via UPS. We made out the cards and sent them back to her. We billed for the time it took to make out the cards and posting them back to her.

Some people need phone calls made, responses written up to emails, help editing documents they have written, etc. Basically, if you can manage to do something remotely then this would fall under the guise of 'virtual assistant'. I hope this helps.

For over a year, I was a virtual assistant for a local painting company, who could not afford to rent an office space.

Once a week I would come in the boss's home office and do things there for a half to whole day.

I answered his cell phone at home, managed most of his accounts for payroll, marketing, advertising, and many spreadsheets.

Hi Mary,

Great question!

I've been a successful Virtual Assistant for over 2 1/2 years (after having been a corporate Executive Assistant for 8+ years) and my definition of a VA is as follows:

"A VA is a micro-business owner who provides business support services while working in long-term collaborative relationships with ONLY carefully selected ideal clients. Using the telephone, a fax machine, email, and various web-based tools, VAs support their clients without ever having to step inside their clients' offices or, in most cases, meet their clients face-to-face.”

If you were running your own Virtual Assistance business, you’d  likely find yourself doing many of the same tasks you would do for a boss or manager in the corporate world, except you'd be doing the work for clients YOU choose! You’d be:

  • Researching, coordinating and managing travel
  • Retrieving messages and returning calls on your clients’ behalf
  • Managing their schedule
  • Updating and organizing their contact database
  • Maintaining a virtual filing system
  • Creating documents, spreadsheets, presentations and reports
  • Researching and purchasing gifts, etc

You could also expand your service offerings to helping with their marketing efforts, customer service requests, transcription and countless other tasks that help an entrepreneur run their company day to day.

This is the perfect time to enter the Virtual Assistant industry! The economy being what it is, more and more people are choosing to start their own business instead of struggling in corporate America. There are countless opportunities for you to engage new clients and support them, all the while creating a thriving business for yourself. You will only be limited by your imagination and your willingness to learn, grow and try new things. Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions!

Best regards,
Sydni
